The past is far less able to defend itself; it cannot formulate rebuttals. Perhaps that is why it is such an easy victim. Thus, an opinion has become common that everything about the present is superior to anything that existed in the past. It is difficult for many people to grasp that lifestyles may have been different in the past, and yet still completely satisfactory to those living them. History has no emissaries.”
Yes, absolutely this!!! What a beautiful way of putting it. Thank you for sharing that quote, I’ll be thinking of it often! (And honestly probably putting it on a notecard on my desk.)
That quote is from her (very good!) book on what she's learned by wearing corsets and other Victorian clothing, but the one you'd most likely be interested in is "This Victorian Life: Modern Adventures in Nineteenth-Century Culture, Cooking, Fashion, and Technologies"
I deeply value her perspectives and respect her modest but very strong sense of self. A really cool human!
This is fantastic! I actually almost started a substack called What We Ate - sort of along the same lines, more of a memoir about food. I looove old cookbooks.
